How to Care for Soy Candles with Wood Wicks

We all want to get the longest life out of our candles. Here, you’ll find some tips on how to get the most out of your handmade candles, including caring for wood wicks and cement vessels.

Best Practices for Getting the Longest Life From Your Candles

  • Let the wax pool reach the edges: During the first burn, allow the melt pool to cover the full surface. This prevents tunneling and helps the candle last longer.

  • Burn in shorter sessions: Limit each burn to two or three hours. This protects the container and keeps the fragrance balanced.

  • Keep the surface clean: Remove any wick trimmings or debris from the wax before lighting.

    • Note that wax discoloration may not indicate an unclean surface. Some scent oils, such as vanilla, tend to cause tanning or browning of the wax. However, dust and fine particles can cause your candle wax to react in various ways. This does not affect the product quality.

  • Place on a stable surface: Set the candle on a heat-safe, even surface. Please keep it away from drafts, curtains, or loose items.

  • Stop when one-half inch of wax remains: This protects the container from overheating.

Tips for Maintaining Candles with Wood Wicks

  • Trim the wick: Keep the wood wick at one-eighth to one-quarter inch. A short wick helps the flame stay steady and prevents soot.

  • Let the wax melt to the edges: During the first burn, allow the melt pool to reach the sides. This supports clean, even burns.

  • Light the wick along the top edge: Hold the flame across the full width of the wick. This helps the wick catch and stay lit.

  • Extinguish with care: Use a snuffer to avoid smoke.

  • Break off charred bits: Before each burn, snap off loose char or use a wick trimmer. Please don't let debris fall into the wax.

Caring For Candle Cement Vessels

To get the longest life out of your candle cement vessels, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid soaking: Do not place the vessel in water. Do not run it through a dishwasher.

  • Clean with a soft cloth: Use a dry or slightly damp cloth for routine cleaning. Avoid harsh cleaners or scrub pads.

  • Protect the surface: Place the candle on a stable, heat-safe surface. We add felt protective bottoms or bumper tabs to protect surfaces. However, if these are removed or come off, add a coaster for the vessel to sit on. Cement can scratch delicate surfaces.

  • Watch for fun natural variations: Cement may show small pores or slight color shifts. These features are standard and bring character to each vessel.

  • Stop use at one-half inch of wax: End the burn when one-half inch of wax remains. This protects the vessel from heat stress.

  • Handle with care: Cement can chip or break if dropped or mistreated.
